Yes, this is amazing, and yes, Chipotle has parted ways with former owner McDonald's, and yes, they have committed to being the first fast food chain to strip its menu of all genetically engineered food ingredients... they are often criticized for "green-washing" - or trying to sound organic when they're not (hello, GMO-corn in the tortilla chips) but this bit of honesty should be a warning to all of us:
“We’ve heard from customers who are surprised to see that there are any GMOs in our food,” Arnold [Chipotle's Director of Communications] said, “but the truth is they are enormously difficult to avoid in this country.”In fact, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, 93 percent of the soybeans grown in America, and 85 percent of the corn comes from genetically modified seed.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/chipotle-labels-gmo-meu-items-article-1.1407988#ixzz2f0t6uPVO
My 7 year old refuses to eat at McDonalds, saying it's poison. This is not something he hears from me, (I like a good Big Mac every once in a while) but from friends at school. He gets it.
All they need to do, he says, is use real food. Real hamburgers.
It's easy, he says.
I ask about the apples they put in the Happy Meals.
That's OK, he says, but all they have to do is just use real food.
Attention, Marketers: That is the perception of the younger generation. Gonna be a hard one to overcome. Chipotle is listening.
