The Women + Film VOICES Film Fest is a six day event from Tuesday March 6 through Sunday March 11, 2012 - centered around International Women's Day, on Thursday March 8. Through documentaries, feature films, salons, and many in-person guests, Voices will showcase thought-provoking, inspirational stories of women from around the world. Each film will have a Voices host, either a woman personally involved with the film or a Denver community leader who will the film and lead a Q&A discussion afterwards. In addition, the Voices Salon Series will feature inspirational and accomplished women from the Denver area leading discussions on relevant issues featured in the Festival.
We got a few minutes of Tammy's time to ask a few questions:
So how did you come up with the project?
The Women+Film VOICES Film Fest is in it's 2nd year. I pitched the idea to the Denver Film Society a little over 2 years ago, they then programed it under their Women+Film Brand. The idea came from my work as a district delegate for CARE USA, a non profit that advocates for women's issues globally and my love for film and film festivals. Our mission for the festival is to help bring attention to women's issues locally and globally and to celebrate inspirational stories from around the world.
What kind of films are showing?
This year we have 15 films that run the gamut of topics from the Academy Award winning documentary Saving Face (produced and directed by a Denver crew) about the vicitims of acid burnings in Pakistan to a documentary about Patty Schemel, the drummer from the band Hole to our closing night film the newest version of Wuthering Heights, which premiered at Sundance this year. Each film is preceded by a short film made by people in the community and we will have 2 Salons, that cover topics inspired by the festival.
How do you select the films for inclusion?
Because we are small mini-fest, the Denver Film Society programs the festival, we do not take submissions. So, we look at what has shown as recent film festivals and also look to a couple distributors that carry women specific programing. For instance - Ethel, The Invisible War and Wuthering Heights all had their premiers at the Sundance Film Fest this past January, which a couple of us attended.
