Toys for Tots is an organization founded and run by the Marine Corps to provide toys for Christmas for kids in need. In Denver, that includes 118,000 kids who would otherwise spend Christmas without getting a single present.
This year, they are woefully low on toys - 70,000 low, to be exact.
One Stapleton mom and her 13 year old son, who is a student at the Denver School of Science & Technology, decided to go volunteer their time for a few hours today. They were shocked at the empty shelves in the huge warehouse. They were especially moved by the lack of toys for kids in the 10-12 age range.
"Being there really put it into perspective for me when there was only one box for the boys and one box for the girls in that age group -- and they weren't even full," Elke told me. "I would love to help out in some way, and I know the Stapleton community is awesome. If you could get this information posted on your blog, I would be happy to put a donation box on our front porch and collect the toys and bring them to the Toys for Tots warehouse. The toys have to be new and in unopened packaging. I would hate to see a child go without something to open up on Christmas day."
Toys for Tots has extended their deadline to drop off toys to Tuesday, December 20. If people would like to donate, Elke will have a box on her front porch in Stapleton, 2833 Elmira St., and will bring the donations to the Toys for Tots warehouse.
You can also make a direct donation to the Toys for Tots warehouse between 7:30 am - 5:00 pm daily or call 303.801.0166 to set-up a drop-off time. The warehouse is located at 12650 E. 33rd Ave., Aurora, Suite 103.
