Go to Santa's Workshop at the North Pole
We took the boys to North Pole, home of Santa's Workshop in Colorado Springs today.
Totally exceeded our expectations!
I have to admit, it was a challenge just to make it there. Both boys got carsick, prompting me to wonder why we ever attempt to take them anywhere. We ran into some friends who said, "Oh, was that you pulled over to the side of the road? We were kind of chuckling as we passed you - that sucks!"
But once my boy got it all out, he immediately felt better. "Let's go!!"
You might think it's a State Fair type of theme park, but you'd be wrong. It's a charming, Disney-esque, step-back-in-time kind of theme park. It's the kind of place that my boys woke up this morning and said, "Remember the Christmas train? Remember the motorcycle ride?"
From the candy colored chair lifts on the Sky Ride to the ornaments on the Christmas tree ride, from the peppermint candy slide to the reindeers on the carousel, from Santa's cottage to the full service North Pole post office, there is something magical about this place. Even the toy stores - one for boys, one for girls - are filled with great toys.
Some hints for getting the most out of your day:
1. Get a special discount coupon here. It gets you $3 off admission, but more importantly, is like the golden ticket - your special invitation. A great time for The Elf on the Shelf to make an appearance!
2. Dress warm. Really. You're at the base of Pikes Peak, at 7,500 feet. Be prepared. Boots, warm socks, hats and mittens.
3. Get there early - they open at 10 am. When you arrive, try to bypass the rides so you can get in line to visit Santa. Lines get long around lunchtime and stay that way all afternoon. Plus, there is the promise of The Enchanted Forest and more rides past the Village Square.
4. Drink hot cocoa all day long.
Our boys are 5 and 2, and it was the perfect age for them - they loved every ride - even the whirly-twirly teacups. I think we have a new holiday tradition to add to the list!
