Dog days of summer

Overheard at the gym this morning (much to my huge relief):
"I can't wait for school to start. Three more weeks!"
(Me too! I feel guilty for saying so; my boy's going to kindergarten. Aren't I supposed to be sad?)
"I don't know how we're going to fill the time. He/She is tired of the library, bored with the pool, too hot to ride bikes."
(Us too.)
"He just wants to see his friends. All he does is fight with his little brother/sister."
(Oh. I hear you. Nonstop bickering.)
"The zoo?"
(Too hot.)
"The museum is air conditioned."
(Yeah. Did that last week.)
So this is what they mean by the dog days of summer: just plain tuckered out.
We're new here, and I love your ideas for things to do. We been struggling with the dog days too, but found a new activity today that was popular with our 3 yr old. We rode bikes (he rode in the chariot) (but you could also drive) to 30th and Downing, and took the light rail to the 16th St. Mall, and rode the (free) bus to the Tattered Cover Book Store (LOVE that place). It was a 3 hour excursion filled with lots to see and experience for him. Sure, we could have driven downtown (probably would have spent much more than the $4.50 the light rail ticket cost on gas and parking?) but this was an adventure!
Pete, what a great idea - light rail! We see the trains (from the car) and my boys are squealing. Guess I didn't realize we could catch it relatively close. Thanks for the tip!
