3 perfect hours... with your girlfriends

It's been a long time since I've done a "3 Perfect Hours" post, where I write about places to go and things to do with your kids. Friends were asking when I was going to revive them, so I thought the perfect one to start with is 3 perfect hours with your girlfriends.

It's easy for moms to get completely consumed by your kids and their activities. When they're newborns, they need your full attention for obvious reasons. If you're breastfeeding, even three hours away can be too much. We console ourselves with the thought, "Surely I'll have more time once they're older."

The truth is, as they get older kids demand even more of your time. Hobbies? What are those? Friends? I only have time for friends with kids. Here's an idea for a Saturday morning out with your girlfriend that you haven't seen in a while.

Start with a vinyasa flow class at Samahdi Yoga in Uptown, at 19th and Pearl. Have you been to this studio? It's got two gorgeous, wood-floored studios -- one with a giant Buddha painted on the wall, and the other with a goddess. They offer both 8:00 and 8:30 classes -- go for the 8:00 class, it's not crowded and the room is still and calming. Don't worry about your skill level - I've been to several classes and the teachers always offer variations for those of us who are less flexible. They also offer a pre-natal class on Tuesday mornings with Jesse, the cutest pregnant teacher ever. It's only $8 to dropin-- great deal!

After class, walk a couple of blocks over to 17th and enjoy a healthy brunch at vegetarian favorite Watercourse Foods. It's a 5280 Reader's Choice favorite every year. It's easy to be dairy, soy and gluten free here. In fact, the Watercouse Bakery specializes in gluten and dairy free baked goods. I had a slice of g-free, dairy-free chocolate cake when I went, even though it was just 10:30 in the morning. It was delicious and I didn't think one bit about calories or fat or anything but chocolate.

Omelettes? Many, many varieties. Breakfast burritos? Of course. Pancakes? Yes, and g-free too. Even biscuits and gravy. It can get loud in here, and it's always busy, so get a patio table for a nice conversation over your spicy, made-with-real-ginger, chai.

After brunch, head over to Marczyck Fine Foods to browse the gourmet food selections and pick up dinner. Head to produce land first to check out their selection of locally grown vegetables, including some amazing edibles from Elaine, who lives across the street and brings over things like delicate fairytale eggplants, fractal-shaped broccolinis (really! why oh why didn't I take a picture??), heirloom tomatoes and more. Pick up some of their prepared bean salad - just the right mix of vinegary dressing and vegetable crunch.

Show your husband how much you appreciate him watching the kids and bring home some beer brats, or all-beef hotdogs, or knackwurst and some New England slice-top rolls -- east coasters go crazy when they see these beloved buns. Or if you're really adventerous, pick up the makings for lobster rolls.

They also have a wine shop, so don't skip that, even though you might be checking your watch and wondering if your husband let the kids build forts out of the couch cushions again.

Relax, rejuvenate, reconnect. Three perfect hours, while dad's watching the kids,  in Uptown on a Saturday morning with your girlfriends.
