School Update

Saturday, August 29, 2009 Leave a Comment

Denver Public Schools has launched a page on their site to keep us updated on "The Stapleton Initiative." A list of our FAQs and their Proposed Solutions is there, although when I click on them I get nothing. We can expect the full list of Proposed Solutions in mid-October.

The Stapleton United Neighbors have an education info page up too.

In the meantime, SUN and DPS are holding focus groups. If you want to be a part, read on:

Invitation to participate in focus groups with DPS:

Dear Stapleton resident,

As a follow-up to the August 5th Stapleton community meeting, the Stapleton United Neighbors (SUN) Board, through its Education Committee, will be convening four focus groups in collaboration with Denver Public Schools (DPS). The purpose of these focus groups is to discuss space solutions that can address the immediate overcrowding situation. DPS will present the most adequate and commonly suggested solutions and request feedback from the focus group regarding their pros and cons. Two of these focus groups will meet prior to the September 15th Community Forum, with the remaining two meeting prior to the mid October community meeting with DPS.
SUN's Education Committee and DPS would like to have a variety of residents from around the community participate in these meetings. To achieve this, we will conduct four focus groups with a total of 25 community members per group. Some of the positions are being filled via recommendations from the principals of Stapleton schools and the grassroots organization The Stapleton Community Education Coalition (CEC), with the remaining positions being filled through general community members. The goal is to get a good representation of parents, teachers, administrators, and residents without children.
The focus groups will meet on Thursdays—September 3, 10, 24, and Oct 1 from 6:30 to 8pm—at library of Westerly Creek Elementary, located at 8800 E 29th Ave. If you are interested in participating in one of the four focus groups, you may contact us by emailing SUNEducationCommittee@gmail.com. Please include the following information in your email:
Your first and last name
Telephone number and email address
Affiliation (Stapleton parent, Stapleton teacher, at-large community member)
Number of children in your family (including their ages and the schools they currently attend)
Dates you are available to attend

These meetings are very important to the community and as such, SUN has created a set of norms that all participants are expected to accept and abide by in order to participate:
Be respectful of all ideas and questions.
Presume positive intent.
Participate. There is no such thing as a dumb idea or comment.
Listen fully before reacting to another comment.
Respect the confidentiality of individual members' ideas once you leave the focus group. (Notes will be provided for anyone interested in learning the general contents of the meeting.)

In order to keep the community informed of these focus groups, notes will be made available following each focus group via the SUN Education Committee and Denver Public Schools web pages: www.stapletonunitedneighbors.com/education and www.dpsk12.org.

Thank you in advanced for your interest in the Stapleton focus groups.

Sincerely,
The SUN Education Committee
