The ministry of food

Alice Waters -- the famous restauranteur from Berkeley who pretty much made famous California cuisine -- has a great proposal for our new Prez: get yourself a Ministry of Food. Start with a garden at the White House and start serving visiting dignitaries American, home-grown, locally produced, pasture-raised meat and organically grown vegetables.

If you haven't read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver, do yourself a favor and read it before spring. Next thing you know, you'll be ordering heirloom vegetable seeds (did you know we grow a mere 30% of vegetable varieties that American farmerse grew 100 years ago? think about what a devestating disease could do to a homogenized food crop....), starting your own garden and insisting that King Soopers carry pasture-finished beef.

You might find yourself signing up for the Denver Door-to-door organics service, where each month you'll get an abundance of locally grown vegetables. You might take the kids to visit the Urban Farm, just a stone's throw from Stapleton.

At the very least, you'll want to know where your food really comes from.
