Casa Bonita!
If you grew up in Colorado, you remember the hugely exciting outings to Casa Bonita -- the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants. It's a huge pink castle located in a strip mall on Colfax in Lakewood and it features cliff divers, puppet shows, a haunted scary cave, and a creepy wishing well, and... oh! my heart quickens just thinking about it! and sopapillas and...
If you haven't seen the South Park episode, it captures Casa Bonita perfectly. Go watch a little clip here.
And now boingboing has a post about it (I love people's reactions: Holy bejeebus!! Casa Bonita really exists???)
I haven't been there in.... oh, probably 30 years and now I MUST TAKE MY 2 YEAR OLD SON. Sounds like a Friday night is the time to go, not lunchtime on Tuesday. You must have crowds to capture the full ambiance. The food was truly awful when I was a kid, but really, you can't go wrong with chips & salsa, a Tecate, and sopapillas (can you?) and kids are too excited to eat anything anyway.
I have unfortunately visited that restaurant. I found it gaudy and the food terrible. I'm sure kids would love it though, sigh. I plan not to tell my daughter anything about it.
I also have fond memories of Casa Bonita. We lived about 4 hours away in Nebraksa and we'd visit Casa Bonita on our rare trips to Denver. It was one of the "big city" things that we did while we were here. (I shudder to admit that now.)
Your morning sickness must have passed if your considering taking your son there!
