Words of inspiration for running moms
I recently had the pleasure of talking with a remarkable Colorado runner, Ellen Hart. She's going to be inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame on Wednesday, and she'll be running the Colfax Marathon as part of the Fleet Feet women's relay team.
Ellen will turn 50 next week, and in addition to her numerous running accomplishments -- she ran in the Olympic trials, set a couple of American records, won the Bolder Boulder twice -- she's started competing in triathlons. In her first year, she qualified for the World Championships, and she did it again this year. A few weeks ago, she set a course record -- by 6 minutes! -- at a triathlon in Florida. Did I mention she's turning 50? This is not just a win in her age group, but setting a new course record.
I told her about my 3 year hiatus from running, and how our Stroller Strides group just ran a 5K.
She said she remembered when her children were young, she went several years without running. Then injuries and plantar fasciatis left her unable to run for another few years. That's when she started biking and swimming, and... well, now she's winning triathlons and competing in the world championships.
"You have a lot of years ahead," she said, "So don't worry too much about taking a break."
